RANCH & FARM SUPPLIES
About the owners
WW Feed & Supply LLC is a family owned and operated business in La Junta, CO. In July 2000, Curt & Susan Russell purchased & expanded the store (history below).
Curt & Susan have been involved with agriculture for their entire lives. Both grew up on farm and cattle operations in Kansas and both graduated from Kansas State University. While at KSU, Curt worked at the university’s Beef Research Center. After graduation, Curt worked on Land O’ Lakes’ beef research farm in Iowa then started a 10-year career with Foxley Cattle, with his first company position as assistant manager of a 35,000-head commercial cattle feedlot. After two years, Curt was promoted to the company’s home office in Omaha, where he handled much of the marketing of both grain and cattle, as well as worked with the consulting nutritionist to make the most economical rations possible for the company’s several feedlots. Meanwhile, Susan took master’s degree courses and pursued her journalism career as editor of daily newspapers in Iowa and Nebraska.
In 1991, they moved to Colorado where Curt took over management of Foxley’s 40,000-head feedlot in Ordway, CO. After two years, the Russells decided to try ranching full time in Colorado, but it was the wrong stage of the cattle cycle and so that dream was sidelined to evenings and weekends. Susan went to work as editor for the local agricultural newspaper, and Curt took a job selling DTN’s satellite information systems.
In 1996, Curt become a representative for Consolidated Nutrition, one of the forerunners of ADM Animal Nutrition. Three years of intense experience with feed dealers and livestock producers of all kinds prepared the Russells to purchase the feed business of Doyle and Viola Winters, one of Curt’s CN customers.
Ever since, Curt, Susan and their sons have been working hard at WW Feed & Supply to bring our customers the information and products they need. Curt, Susan and sons also continue to own Reflected R Ranch, a producer of registered Simmental seedstock near Sugar City, CO. In addition, Curt & Susan each have served on the national Simmental board, and continue to fill many volunteer and industry leadership roles.
WW Feed & Supply is a full-service livestock and pet feed and supply dealership. Our motto, “If it eats, we can feed it”, describes our mission. We want to supply feed and nutritional information for your animals, whether it’s a truckload of cattle feed or a few pounds of chicken feed. Our experience and relationships with our suppliers give us great access to a wide variety of feeds and expert nutritional advice, which we tap into for one-on-one consulting or for our annual customer educational workshops.
In combination with our in-house grind and mix feed mill, we can supply you with the feeds you need, custom designed to your specifications, in amounts large or small, either bulk or bagged, picked up at the store or delivered to your site.
We can help you design rations for your commercial livestock enterprise, using as much of your own feedstuffs as possible and supplementing only what is needed. Curt’s education and work experience allow him to help you design the most effective nutritional solution for your operation, plus Dr. Gerald Walker is on the WW Feed team. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll find someone who does.
History of the StoreThe business roots of WW Feed & Supply LLC actually started as a hatchery. Today, WW Feed & Supply LLC still sells baby poultry each spring, but those chicks aren't home-grown.
In 1947, Efton & Juanita Duncan and A.C. Milburn formed Duncan & Milburn Inc. Hatchery. Originally opening in Swink, they moved a year later to La Junta. By 1952, the business name was changed to Duncan Feed & Hatchery and moved to 414 West 1st Street in La Junta, into a new two-story building the Duncan family built to house their business on the first floor and their two-bedroom home on the second floor. In 1957, they leased the old Santa Fe Railroad building at 303 West 1st Street (today's site) and changed their business name first to Duncan Feeders Supply and later to Duncan Products Co. The store’s first grain elevator and scale were added during this period.
In 1980, Doyle & Viola Winters purchased the business and renamed it WW Feeds Inc. It was successfully run by just the Winters family, then operated with partners, and finally ownership returning to Doyle & Viola. Curtis Russell was a Consolidated Nutrition consultant for a territory including WW Feeds Inc. and discovered that the couple wanted to retire. Ranchers Curt & Susan Russell purchased the business in July 2000, but kept a portion of the business name to make it more convenient for customers.
WW Feed & Supply LLC is still owned and operated by Curt & Susan Russell, who not only expanded the La Junta operation, but from March 2003 to October 2017, they added satellite offices at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. For 15 years, WW Feed & Supply served as the feed & bedding supplier for the Fair, plus year-round livestock and equine events held on the Colorado State Fairgrounds.
At the La Junta site, WW Feed & Supply has experienced enormous growth. They have revamped the mill, upgraded the warehouse and ramps, added in two more storage site options to handle demand, added a tack room and renovated the main showroom area. They also have added semitrucks and various trailers for more delivery options, so WW Feed & Supply can haul nearly all ag products, including bags and bulk dry feed, liquid feed, grain, cubes and cattle. WW Feed & Supply LLC offers a full range of livestock and pet food, but its primary focus is cattle feed and supplements, as well as balancing and creating custom rations, and offering related services.
